Using The Net To Catch More Fans
Like rock and roll? Or maybe country, R'n'B or soul? How about a combination of all four? What might sound like an aural nightmare has proved a hit on the internet thanks to Shawn Harvey and his latest album Cyberoxin, writes Louise Hart.
Tracks from the St. Austell singer/songwriter have been received well on many MP3 sites around the world and his latest album has been released on the net.
Recently Shawn has been experimenting in the studio working with producers on a sound which combines rock'n'roll and R'n'B with house and dance music. He has found a record producer and promoter in London and is currently recording a three-track demo.
I f you want to find out more about Shawn and his music then visit www.shawnharvey.com. For those who like what they hear and don't mind the trek he will be playing Torquay Riviera Centre on July 29. |

Boppin' Around Rockabilly Magazine - Dutch Review of Teasarama Album 2001
Teasarama/Shawn Harvey
De stijl van Harvey wordt omschreven als 'influenced by R&B, mixed with modern dance beats and sounds, crossed with rock'n'roll arrangements and guitar riffs, it is a new style entitled electro-retro...' I Hear You Knocking' Edmunds. Wanted: more musicians and a band name for Rocker Ricky's new backing band
Rock'n'roller Ricky Fentone is halfway to paradise after sourcing the services of local musicians to be his backing band - but still needs sax, drums and keyboards to complete the line-up.
The clay village stomper, who fronted the Flat Top Cats in Wales before returning to his Cornish roots, is also stuck for a name for the new backing band and is offering prizes for the winning suggestion.
Says Ricky: 'My new album is called Musicman and the one who comes up with the best name will win the album, and also the Ricky Rocks album, Cadillac Man, a few signed photos, a keyfob and a pen.'
He said his new material would reflect his rock'n'roll roots, but also sound modern and fresh.
Ricky can be contacted on 0774 716763.

St. Austell-based musician and composer Shawn Harvey could be Stateside bound after success via the internet with his latest album.
Shawn says one of America's top promoters picked up on a couple of songs from Cyber Boy while surfing the net, and one of them will be showcased by the promoter on a compilation CD to be distributed to major record labels in the US.
'I'm not allowed to give the name of this guy at the moment, but he was the man who discovered Christina Aguilera - so being signed up by him is fantastic.' said Shawn.
Cyber Boy, featuring a mix of rockabilly, country and dance beats, is very much a family affair; the singer writing the music and playing all the instruments, while wife Silke helped out with lyrics, and his dad Arthur is also credited with the words to one of the songs.
Anyone wishing to contact Shawn, who is looking for musicians, can contact him via shawnharvey10@hotmail.com or can listen to tracks from Cyber Boy via http://www.mp3.com/shawnharvey.

Shawn Harvey: Rock'n'Roll rebel ready for download
Cyber Kid Teddy Boy
With his quiff and a leather jacket Shawn Harvey just seems like another rockabilly rebel - but the St. Austell tunesmith looks set to hit the rock and roll high school.
With more than 300 songs to stomp his creepers to, the Shakin' Stevens fan has a promoter in America looking at his work and has more websites devoted to him than any other artist we have jived along to.
His work is featured on no less than four websites covering pages of information.
'I first started in 1989 with an audition for Stars In Their Eyes as Shaky where I was told to start doing my own stuff as I did.' said Shawn.
Shawn then played in a rockabilly band called Ricky Fentone and the Flat Top Cats recording several albums with the group.
Hell, the guy's even written a musical called Zog about the space age.
'When I was younger' he said, 'I used to follow a lot of 50s bands. I like that era and now I want to bring the feel of these stars into the new era. I also like Blondie, Shania Twain and Abba. I think that I am quite unique.'
His latest CD Cyber Boy (which is available in most independent music shops or online at www.soundclick.com/shawnharvey) is a heady collection of raw rock and roll songs with a free wheelin' 50s feel, a feeling like you just pulled out of a Bodmin roadside cafe in your MkI Capri onto the A30 with your windows down and the wireless honking out a teddy boy classic.
The man has met Chuck Berry and Hank Marvin - although not at the same time - and is now looking for a band to start gigging in the county and further afield.
Shawn can be contacted at shawnharvey10@hotmail.com and his music can be downloaded at www.mp3.com/shawnharvey. |

Ricky Fentone and the Flat Top Cats
From time to time a set of photos falls on my desk that makes me sit up and take some notice. When Shawn Harvey dropped me a line early in October I knew immediately that we just had to do something with this material as it is so well done and makes a good story. So if Ricky Fentone and the Flat Top Cats ever makes it into the charts you can say, 'I read about them in Centre Section, they drive a 101!'
Shawn (stage name Ricky Fentone) hails from Aberdare, Mid Glamorgan, and as you have probably guessed is a singer, songwriter and guitarist in his own band thhe Flat Top Cats. He bought the restored 101 in May this year as a band wagon, using it as an everyday car as well as advertising medium for the troop. When purchased it had 38,000 miles on the clock and Sahwn has added another 3000 in the past few months. The history of the car is known from new as it was registered on 1/12/66 in Brecon as CEU 548D with the first owner change coming in February 1072. For some reason the car was then laid up in a barn where it lay undisturbed till 1986 when it changed hands again. This time the car received the attention it deserved with the owner fully restoring the car and carrying out a respray in Pampas Green, engine overhaul, etc, to get it in full running order. Shawn says the car performs very well and he does most of the maintenance himself.
The 101 is a good car for the Cats as not only does it turn heads wherever it goes, it reflects the era of music which the band likes, namely Rock'n'Roll, Country, Blues, etc. Shawn, or should I say Ricky, has written well over 200 songs by now including a Rock'n'Roll musical called Zog, the first intergalactical R&R spoof set in space. Over 150 songs have been recorded in his own studio and he hopes to present these to the record industry in the near future.

The Rock'n'Roll Singer
Ricky Nelson once
went to a garden party
I myself have never been
he said you can't
please everyone
I understand what he means
sometimes a book is
judged by its cover
but those who judge
judge themselves
But don't take no notice
just keep on going
like Ricky said
you've got to please yourself
As a Rock'n'Roll singer
you take your knocks
people try to put you down
in Madison Square
they even threw rocks
but it never stopped Ricky
with his great sound
I myself have had ups and downs
like all the greats too
even though I've yet
to make it big
I've tried, done it
and been there too
